How effectively is the Government supporting social mobility?
The Women and Equalities Committee (WEC) will hear from the Chair and Director of the Social Mobility Commission during an annual evidence session in Parliament exploring its role and the wider issue of social mobility as part of WEC’s regular scrutiny work.
Meeting details
The session will assess the current state of social mobility in the UK, including variations by region, gender, and ethnicity. Discussion will cover how effectively the Government is supporting social mobility, and what further steps need to be taken. The Social Mobility Commission is an advisory non-departmental body which reports to the Office for Equality and Opportunity.
During the second panel, the Committee will question two companies which have committed to promoting social mobility and a charity which aims to advance social mobility and produces a Social Mobility Employer Index. MPs will examine the benefits of social mobility for UK businesses and the wider economy, social mobility programmes and their effectiveness, as well as key barriers faced by individuals from lower socioeconomic backgrounds in recruitment and the workplace.
