DUP and SDLP give evidence to Northern Ireland Scrutiny Committee

On Wednesday 18 June, the Northern Ireland Scrutiny Committee continues its inquiry into strengthening Northern Ireland's voice within the Windsor Framework.

At 10:45am, the DUP leader, Rt Hon Gavin Robinson MP will given evidence to the inquiry, followed by the SDLP's Assembly Leader, Matthew O'Toole MLA at 11:45am. Both witnesses will be questioned on how effectively Northern Ireland politicians, officials, and stakeholders are currently represented within the Windsor Framework. their expectations for the Independent Review of the Windsor Framework, led by Lord Murphy of Torfaen, and their views on the recent SPS agreement announced after the UK-EU summit, among other topics.

The Committee are also expected to ask questions on the following:

  • The effectiveness of structures and mechanisms in place for Northern Ireland stakeholders to engage with the Windsor Framewor
  • The operation of measures announced in the ‘Safeguarding the Union’ command paper such as the working group with the NI Executive, the UK East-West Council, Intertrade UK and the Independent Monitoring Panel
  • Effectiveness of the Stormont Brake and the applicability motion procedure
  • The role and function of the Northern Ireland Assembly’s Windsor Framework Democratic Scrutiny Committee
  • Opportunities for direct Northern Ireland engagement with EU structures, for example between the Northern Ireland Executive and the European Commission or the Northern Ireland Assembly and the European Parliament
