What is the role of news organisations in improving media literacy? Committee takes evidence

The Communications and Digital Committee takes evidence from The Guardian Foundation, the Public Interest News Foundation and the Head of Journalism at Liverpool John Moores University as part of its inquiry into media literacy.

Meeting details

At 2:30pm: Oral evidence
Inquiry Media literacy
Head of Journalism at Liverpool John Moores University
Head of News and Media Literacy at The Guardian Foundation
Executive Director at Public Interest News Foundation

Background

The Committee is exploring media literacy in the UK and how it can be improved. Only 45% of UK adults are confident they can judge whether sources of information are truthful and just 30% believe they can identify content that is created by AI.

The inquiry is considering the key actions required to enhance media literacy skills across the UK population, to enable citizens to engage with the digital world safely and responsibly.

Possible areas for discussion

Possible areas for discussion with witnesses include:

  • The role of the news industry in supporting the development of media literacy skills.
  • The practical and ethical challenges that impact the industry’s ability to deliver media literacy initiatives.
  • The policy changes that would make the greatest difference in improving media literacy in the UK.
