MPs quiz Development Minister on aid cuts and international humanitarian law breaches
MPs on the International Development Committee will question the Development Minister, Baroness Chapman, on Tuesday 13 May.
In the first half of the session, members will ask the Minister to explain the Government’s vision for development, amid cuts leaving UK development spending at its lowest levels in decades.
They are likely to examine the Government’s commitment to its development obligations, such as the Sustainable Development Goals, and how the UK’s aid programme will be affected by major cuts to the United States’ development budget.
Meeting details
In the second half of the session, members will ask about the UK’s possible responses to violence against aid workers and breaches of international humanitarian law, as the Committee concludes its inquiry into humanitarian access.
With 2024 the deadliest year for aid workers on record, members are likely to ask about the Government’s obligations – both legal and moral – to ensure safe and unrestricted delivery of aid, and what circumstances would lead the UK to take action against breaches of international humanitarian law.
