What’s next for the UK-EU relationship?
The Foreign Affairs Committee will hold its first evidence session in its inquiry into the UK-EU reset, ahead of the Prime Minister’s 19 May summit with European leaders in London. This session will explore the potential outcome of the summit and discuss the three pillars of the UK-EU reset: safety, security and prosperity.
Representatives from think tanks Best for Britain and UK in a Changing Europe will give evidence alongside Professor David Paton, Professor of Industrial Economics, Nottingham University Business School.
Meeting details
Questions are likely to focus on the wider geopolitical and strategic context of the reset, including the UK Government’s position that it will not “choose” between a close partnership with the United States and the European Union. The Committee may discuss the potential for a Security and Defence Partnership between the UK and the European Union. Members are likely to ask about the UK Government’s “red lines” around freedom of movement and trade in the context of the reset, and what these may mean for future relationship between the UK and European Union.
