How is the UN supporting displaced people amid funding cuts?
Next week, the International Development Committee will hear evidence on how United Nations organisations are supporting displaced people amid significant cuts to aid budgets, particularly in the US and UK.
On Tuesday 29 April, MPs will ask representatives from the UN Population Fund and High Commissioner for Refugees how their organisations are prioritising work and whether they are concerned that future funding will come with new conditions attached.
Meeting details
With one in five displaced women likely to face sexual and gender-based violence, MPs are also likely to ask how reduced funding might affect women and girls in particular.
The Committee will also consider whether responses to displacement should be viewed through a humanitarian or development lens. Members will question which is likely to offer greater long-term solutions and better value for taxpayer money. They may also ask whether focusing on stabilising fragile situations could help relieve the “missing middle” between the two.
