How will aid cuts affect UK’s support for long-term refugees? MPs hear evidence

On Tuesday 1 April, MPs on the International Development Committee will explore the factors driving record-high numbers of people to flee their homes all over the world.

Two panels of expert witnesses will give evidence on the UK Government’s approach to tackling displacement.

One critical factor in people fleeing their homes is violence, with one report finding last year that 68 million of the 76 million people internally displaced last year were displaced by violence and conflict.

But while the previous Government emphasised the importance of early action to prevent conflict, MPs are likely to ask how cuts to the UK’s aid budget and Integrated Security Fund might impede these efforts.

MPs are also likely to ask about:

  • The unique and potentially overlooked challenges faced by displaced women and girls
  • How local knowledge and civil society groups can improve the UK’s work on displacement
  • How international law could be improved to better support displaced people
