Committee examines international approaches to media literacy
In the second evidence session of its inquiry into media literacy, the Communications and Digital Committee examines international approaches, hearing from experts from Canada, Finland, the Republic of Ireland and Belgium (Flanders).
Meeting details
Background
The Committee is exploring media literacy in the UK and how it can be improved. Only 45% of UK adults are confident they can judge whether sources of information are truthful and just 30% believe they can identify content that is created by AI.
The evidence sessions cover what lessons the UK can learn from the media literacy policies and initiatives of other countries. The Committee may explore how media literacy work can be coordinated effectively across different organisations; the role of formal education in improving media literacy; and how barriers to the delivery of media literacy work can be addressed.
Possible areas for discussion
Possible areas for discussion with witnesses include:
- Whether media literacy work in their country is guided by a single national policy or strategy.
- Whether media literacy is integrated into formal education, and if so, how.
- What the impact of media literacy initiatives has been.
