Committee considers proposed new S4C Chair

On Wednesday 23 April, the Welsh Affairs Committee will hold a pre-appointment hearing with Delyth Evans, the Government’s preferred candidate for the Chair of Welsh-language broadcaster S4C.

Government's preferred candidate for the Chair of the Board at S4C

S4C is a wholly Welsh language channel broadcasting independently-produced programmes across a range of genres including news, drama, documentaries, entertainment and children’s. The previous Chair of the Welsh Affairs Committee said the channel was “a vital part of our national life and culture”.

Evans is a former Labour politician, serving as Assembly Member for Mid and West Wales from 2000-2003, and a former chief executive of charity Dress for Success London (now called Smart Works). She has also held board roles at the Film Agency for Wales, Sport Wales and United Response, and worked as a broadcast journalist on S4C current affairs programme Y Byd ar Bedwar.

Recent years have seen the culture at S4C in the national spotlight. In January 2024, the Chair of the previous Welsh Affairs Committee recommended the Government appoint a new Chair, after hearing evidence on its leadership and governance that “concerned” the Committee.

During the session, which will take place in both English and Welsh, MPs will question Ms Evans on her skills and experience for the role. They will likely ask how she intends to provide cultural leadership for S4C, and how she intends to manage the biggest challenges facing the channel, such as securing its long-term funding.
