The work of Ofcom: MPs question Chief Executive Melanie Dawes and Chair Lord Grade

Ofcom Chief Executive Melanie Dawes and Chair Lord Grade appear before the Culture, Media and Sport Committee for a session on the work of the communications regulator.

Meeting details

At 2:30pm: Oral evidence
Work The work of Ofcom (Regular evidence sessions)
Chief Executive at Ofcom

The session focuses on the responsibilities of Ofcom in relation to broadcasting regulation and standards, and the challenges and opportunities in the current environment for media in the UK.

MPs are likely to ask about the regulation of public service broadcasters in the context of the Media Act and how to protect their prominence in a changing media landscape. The pair could also be asked about issues relating to radio regulation, how Ofcom enforces the Broadcasting Code, and its relationship with the BBC ahead of Charter Review.

There could also be questions about Ofcom’s new responsibilities enforcing the provisions in the Online Safety Act and whether it has sufficient resources to carry out all its duties.

Ofcom’s broader remit now sits with the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology following the machinery of government changes in 2023.
