Are aid workers under threat? MPs begin inquiry into humanitarian access and international humanitarian law
MPs on the cross-party International Development Committee will hold the first evidence session of a new inquiry into the risks facing humanitarian aid workers around the world.
On Tuesday 11 March, MPs will hear from witnesses with direct experience of frontline aid work and who have experienced violence first hand. They will also hear from representatives of local and international organisations who manage the safety of aid workers.
Aid workers have come to face greater threats in recent years, as global conflict levels have risen. 2024 was the deadliest year for humanitarian workers on record, surpassing the previous record set in 2023. Gaza was the most lethal conflict for aid workers in 2024, with 212 killed, 135 of which were the result of aerial bombing.
Meeting details
MPs are likely to ask what kinds of threats aid workers face in going about their work. They may ask how well the safety and security of aid workers is supported by their employers and international donors.
They are also likely to explore what more Government donors like the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office could do to support the wellbeing of those delivering UK aid.
