1.5 million new homes target - Is the construction sector equipped to deliver? Housing Committee hold evidence session with industry witnesses

On Tuesday morning, the Housing, Communities and Local Government (HCLG) Committee will question the Competition and Markets Authority and witnesses from the construction, planning, and architecture sectors on the capacity of the construction sector to deliver on the Government’s pledge to build 1.5 million new homes by the end of this Parliament.

The cross-party group of MPs will ask questions on recruitment and workforce capacity, on skills and training, and on the likely impact of the removal of some level 7 apprenticeships from the scope of apprenticeship levy funding.

MPs will also examine the wider challenges the industry faces in delivering 1.5 million new homes, including questions around current labour shortages in these sectors.

The Committee will also explore the expected impact of the Government’s planning reforms on streamlining the planning process and how this may affect local planning authorities’ workloads, as well as further reforms to planning that stakeholders would like to see.
