WEC to hear evidence on the manosphere and misogynistic online content
The Women and Equalities Committee (WEC) will hear from academics and experts in Parliament on the impact of the manosphere and misogynistic online content on Wednesday, 21 May.
Meeting details
MPs on the cross-party committee chaired by Labour MP Sarah Owen will examine the online manosphere, exploring its various communities, core beliefs, and prominent influencers. The Committee will assess how the spread of manosphere ideologies can translate into harm for women and girls, both online and offline.
In addition, discussion will focus on the role of social media and online platforms in moderating content, including through deplatforming influencers and demonetising their content. As part of this, the Committee is expected to look into the role of algorithms in both moderating and amplifying misogynistic and harmful material online. MPs will also address related topics, including the impact of extreme pornography, the effectiveness of the Online Safety Act 2023, and the Government’s response to misogynistic content online.
