MPs to question unions on delivering a just transition in Scotland
MPs on the Scottish Affairs Committee will hear from trade unions GMB, Prospect and Unite in the third evidence session of the GB Energy and the net zero transition inquiry.
Meeting details
The UK Government has said the oil and gas industry has lost around a third of its direct workforce in the last decade and there is an urgent need to plan for the future of the North Sea. As the UK moves toward clean energy, the Government aims to coordinate the scale-up of renewable energy sources with the decline of oil and gas extraction in the North Sea.
The session will focus on what the UK Government’s energy transition plans mean for oil and gas workers in Scotland, and how the Government can deliver a ‘just transition’ that does not leave communities behind.
The Committee are also likely to ask whether there will be enough good-quality clean energy jobs for oil and gas workers to transition into. Questions on how effectively the UK Government is preparing the workforce to deliver on its clean energy missions may be asked.
MPs might also ask questions on the UK Government’s handling of the Grangemouth oil refinery closure.
