Members to hear from academic experts on the future of European security

The Defence Committee will hold an evidence session on the UK’s contribution to European security at 10.30am, on Tuesday 1 April. The Committee will speak to academic experts Professor Sir Lawrence Freedman and Dr Alexandra de Hoop Scheffer.  

The session will be an opportunity to explore the current geopolitical situation and its implications for UK defence and security. The Committee are likely to ask about the current situation in Ukraine, including if there is a likelihood of the ceasefire negotiations succeeding.

MPs may also ask about the current US Administration’s approach to European security and the implications this has for its relationships with the UK and Europe. Questions are likely to centre around the future of NATO, the role of the UK’s nuclear deterrent in protecting Europe, and how the UK can work with its European Allies to boost defence industrial production capacity and increase military capabilities.
