Is the local government finance system in England fit for purpose? Housing, Communities and Local Government Committee begins council finances inquiry
On Tuesday morning, the Housing, Communities and Local Government (HCLG) Committee begins the evidence sessions for its inquiry on the funding and sustainability of local government finance, hearing from think tanks and academic experts.
Meeting details
The cross-party group of MPs will ask questions around the financial distress affecting local councils and examine whether the current local government finance system is fit for purpose, looking at areas including council tax, business rates, and the funding available from central government.
MPs are also likely to ask questions on the cost pressures affecting local councils, issues relating to income from commercial investments, and on councils’ provision of preventative and acute services.
The Committee will also examine the measures announced by the Government to reform the local government finance system and the likely effectiveness of the move to multi-year funding settlements.
The inquiry terms of reference are available on the Committee website.
