WEC to hear evidence on female genital mutilation
The Women and Equalities Committee (WEC) will hear from campaigners, health professionals, and safeguarding experts on female genital mutilation during a one-off evidence session in Parliament on Wednesday, 5 March.
Meeting details
MPs on the cross-party committee, chaired by Labour MP Sarah Owen, will examine the prevalence and impact of female genital mutilation (FGM) in the UK. The session will also look at the Government's efforts to prevent FGM within the UK and among UK residents, as well as its work to address the health consequences experienced by survivors.
The first panel features survivors who lead organisations dedicated to combatting FGM and supporting other survivors. The second panel consists of experts on the health impacts of FGM and the role of health services in aiding survivors. The third panel includes a representative from the NSPCC, a retired Detective Constable and a serving Detective Chief Superintendent, allowing the Committee to examine how children are safeguarded against FGM in the UK and the police's work in stopping FGM.
