MPs to question BP and Harbour Energy on the future of the North Sea
The Scottish Affairs Committee will question North Sea oil and gas companies BP and Harbour Energy, as well as industry bodies in the second session of its inquiry into GB Energy and Scotland’s net zero transition.
Meeting details
The Committee is likely to examine the sector’s response to last month’s court ruling that the UK Government unlawfully consented to two new North Sea oil and gas fields, by failing to account for the environmental impact of burning fossil fuels.
The North Sea is a mature basin, and oil and gas production has been in decline over the past two decades. MPs will likely ask BP and Harbour Energy about the anticipated lifespan of the basin and the companies’ views on the continuing role of oil and gas in the UK’s transition to net zero.
On a separate panel, Members will hear from industry bodies representing the oil and gas and associated supply chain sectors. MPs may investigate the role of oil and gas companies in driving the transition towards clean energy, the impact of transition on supply chain companies, and the meaning of a ‘just transition’ for workers.
