Can the UK do more to protect against repression by foreign governments? JCHR holds opening session of transnational repression inquiry
The Joint Committee on Human Rights holds the opening session of its new inquiry into transnational repression in the UK on Wednesday 5 February.
Meeting details
There is currently no single accepted definition of transnational repression . It is generally understood to include instances of intimidation, violence and harassment by a state against people in another state.
The session will examine what forms of transnational repression may be taking place in this country, and the effectiveness of the current legal framework in preventing it.
Safeguard Defenders have raised concerns about the existence of Chinese Overseas Police Service Stations. They believed three stations were operating in the UK and carrying out ‘persuasion to return’ operations.
The session will examine how such stations operated and the impact it may have had on Chinese diaspora communities in the UK.
