Is the UK committed to eliminating global hunger? MPs quiz Minister
On Tuesday 4 February Development Minister Anneliese Dodds will appear before the International Development Committee to discuss the UK Government’s contribution to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2: eliminating hunger by 2030.
In 2015, UN member states signed up to achieving ‘Zero Hunger’: ending hunger and malnutrition, increasing agricultural productivity, developing sustainable food production and increasing the genetic diversity of food.
Yet progress has stalled in recent years with approximately 733 million people – one in eleven people around the world – facing hunger in 2023. It is therefore unclear that SDG 2 will be reached by 2030.
Meeting details
The Minister is appearing prior to the Nutrition for Growth summit, set to be hosted by France on 27 and 28 March 2025. In the past, the UK has led in establishing the summit and used it to announce funding pledges.
In October, the Minister told the Committee that the Nutrition for Growth summit was “incredibly important”. However, she did not name nutrition or food security as one of her six priorities for office and food security.
MPs are likely to ask the Minister how the new Government intends to approach to helping eliminate hunger by 2030, including whether ministers will attend the Nutrition for Growth summit, and whether the Government will make a pledge.
