New Economic Secretary to give Government view on cash acceptance
The Economic Secretary to the Treasury, Emma Reynolds MP, will appear in front of MPs next Tuesday morning as part of the Treasury Committee’s inquiry into cash acceptance.
Meeting details
Ms Reynolds will appear with a senior official from the Treasury’s Payments and Fintech team for this inquiry’s third session.
The Committee may seek to understand the new Minister’s position on cash acceptance given she has not spoken publicly on the issue previously. They may also seek to understand to what extent the Government considers this issue a priority.
In early December, the inquiry into cash acceptance kicked off with a dual panel hearing. First, members heard from representatives at Age UK, Mencap and Surviving Economic Abuse about how certain groups and individuals can disproportionately rely on using cash.
In the second panel of the same session, MPs questioned the Money and Mental Health Policy Institute, a charitable organisation founded by financial journalist and TV personality Martin Lewis, as well as campaign group Payment Choice Alliance.
This was followed by a session just before Christmas which heard the view of the high street including the Post Office, Association of Convenience Stores, National Association of British Market Authorities (NAMBA) and Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers (USDAW).
