Are Marine Protected Areas delivering in protecting our seas and oceans?
As the Environmental Audit Committee holds its second evidence session on ‘Governing the marine environment’, members will be exploring the role of marine protected areas (MPAs) and whether the right balance is being struck between marine protection and usage of marine resources.
Across two panels, members will be hearing from experts on how MPAs could change in the future due to the effects of climate change, and whether the Government is sufficiently supporting nature restoration in efforts to protect 30% of land and seas by 2030.
Meeting details
Earlier this month, EAC was told that while the Government has designated 38% of its seas as MPAs, certain environmentally damaging activities are still permitted. However, there are three highly protected marine areas (HPMAs) in English waters where all extractive activities – such as fishing and mineral extraction – are prohibited. Committee members are expected to quiz witnesses on whether the MPAs and HPMAs are providing the protections intended.
