What progress is being made in preventing cardiovascular disease? MPs to examine
The Health and Social Care Committee will on Wednesday hold an evidence session on progress in preventing cardiovascular disease (CVD),following the National Audit Office’s (NAO) recent report on the topic.
Meeting details
Cardiovascular disease is estimated to affect 6.4 million people in England, costing the healthcare system £7.4 billion each year. CVD contributed to a quarter of all deaths in England in 2022.
The key method for identifying and supporting people at risk of CVD who are not routinely identified by primary care, is the NHS Health Check programme.
In November, a report by the spending watchdog found that the current system to make sure that eligible people in England are offered and attend Health Checks is not working effectively. The NAO recommended a review of how NHS Health Checks are provided.
The Committee will use Wednesday’s session to question experts on the local delivery of NHS Health Checks, their take-up and the process of commissioning and co-ordinating them. Members will also explore the Department’s response to the NAO report with senior officials.
