MPs to examine the future of North Sea oil and gas
The Scottish Affairs Committee will hold the first evidence session of its inquiry into GB Energy and the net zero transition.
Meeting details
The inquiry will examine how the UK Government can support a transition from oil and gas in Scotland’s energy sector that maximises opportunities for jobs and economic growth, and the role that should be played by the new publicly-owned GB Energy.
In the first panel, the Committee will question two climate advisory bodies, the Climate Change Committee and Just Transition Commission. Questions will likely focus on the UK and Scottish Government’s plans for net zero, the future of oil and gas workers and the state of investment in clean power.
In the second panel, Members will hear from leading energy transition research bodies. The Committee could examine views on the economic position and future of North Sea oil and gas, the barriers to investment in clean power and the role of community ownership in the energy sector.
MPs may also ask about the UK Government’s plans for GB Energy, how to achieve a ‘just transition’ for oil and gas workers and what lessons can be learnt from other countries’ transition to clean power.
