Inquiry Prison culture: governance, leadership and staffing

The Committee will cover a range of topics, including lessons learnt from previous reforms, the impacts of moving departmental responsibility for prisons from the Home Office to the restructured Ministry of Justice, and the role of the private sector in running prisons.

Possible Questions:

  • What is the purpose of prisons?
  • How has the media’s coverage of prisons shaped the debate?
  • Given the dramatic increase in our prison population, is a rehabilitative approach still feasible?
  • What makes a good prison governor, and how should their performance be assessed?
  • What reforms would the witnesses seek to make with prisons now?
