MPs to examine the work of HMRC following Autumn Budget
The Treasury Committee will question officials from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) on the work of the department on Wednesday 27 November at 2.15pm.The session is the first opportunity for the Committee to scrutinise HMRC since the general election.
Meeting details
MPs are likely to question officials on the impact of changes announced in the Autumn Budget including the need to increase the size of HMRC’s workforce to close the tax gap and to increase tax revenues.
Earlier in the year, the department announced major changes to its customer service phonelines before reversing the decision when concerns were raised by the previous members of the Treasury Committee as well as others. MPs may ask for an update on the department’s long-term plan for its customer service phonelines.
The Committee may also explore HMRC’s approach to the use of Artificial Intelligence in its operations, and whether a move towards digitisation could impact the resilience of the UK’s tax infrastructure.
