The Justice and Home Affairs Committee is holding its second evidence session as part of its inquiry on prison governance, leadership and staffing.

The Committee is taking evidence from leaders of third sector organisations and a former prison officer. The session will explore the training and recruitment of prison officers and issues around retention.

  • What is the role of a prison officer and what are the qualities of a good prison officer?
  • Is the current approach to centralised recruitment working?
  • In what ways are prison officers currently trained and equipped to deal with all aspects of their roles, what continuous training is offered and how does it relate to career progression?
  • How should prison officers and leaders be assessed in their work?
  • What is the role of a prison governor and how has it changed in recent years?
  • What is the role of third sector organisations and how can they contribute to innovation within HMPPS?
