19 November 2024 - Prison culture: governance, leadership and staffing - Oral evidence

The Justice and Home Affairs Committee is conducting an inquiry into the governance, leadership and staffing of prisons. In the first oral evidence session of the inquiry, the Committee will hear from the Prison Governors’ Association and from a former prison governor about the role of prison governor and the importance of leadership and accountability within HM Prison Service.

Possible Area of questions include:

• What is the role of a prison governor and how has it changed in recent years?
• What are the qualities of a good prison governor?
• Where does accountability lie for poor leadership?
• Do prison governors have enough autonomy?
• How can ‘succession planning’ in prison leadership be better managed?
• How can we secure and promote the pipeline of talent within HM Prison Service?
