The Education Committee will question the Government’s preferred candidate to become the Chief Regulator of Ofqual, Sir Ian Bauckham.
Meeting details
The cross-party Committee will use this session to gauge Sir Ian's suitability for the post. There may be questions about how he will oversee the regulator's continuing response to challenges that disrupted the normal cycle of examinations in schools, including the sector’s recovery from the Covid pandemic and the RAAC crisis.
There may also be questions about future challenges such as the impact of AI on examinations, and forthcoming reforms to post-16 technical qualifications.
Sir Ian has served as the Interim Chief Regulator of Ofqual since January 2024, replacing Dr Jo Saxton. He was selected as the preferred candidate for the permanent role by the previous Education Secretary, Gillian Keegan.
Sir Ian is also Chair of Oak National Academy, an arm’s length body of the Department for Education providing an online classroom and resource hub for state schools across the UK.
