Background

The Committee is examining challenges around scaling up in the UK. The inquiry is looking at AI-first firms, and those working at the intersection of the creative industries and technology (‘crea-tech’). The Committee is seeking to understand how barriers to scale in these specific areas can be addressed to support growth over the next 5 years.

Possible areas for discussion

Possible areas for discussion with witnesses include:

  • The importance of companies scaling up in the UK for the new Government’s growth plans.
  • The challenges posed by the relative size of the UK domestic market.
  • How much it matters if investment comes from within the UK or foreign sources, alongside questions on the potential impact of recent financial reforms.
  • The role of scaling hubs, and the importance of access to skilled employees and infrastructure.
  • The role of Government investment vehicles - such as the British Business Bank and National Wealth Fund.
  • The impact of regulation, and what more the Government can do to support UK businesses in the AI and creative tech sectors.
