MPs probe slow progress to improve patient safety
The second session of the inquiry examines reasons for slow progress to improve patient safety despite specific action being recommended by multiple reviews. The Committee’s independent Expert Panel recently rated overall progress by government to implement such measures as requiring improvement.
Support for whistleblowers and what more could be done to increase staff confidence in action being taken to address their concerns is expected to be raised. The NHS staff survey showed 40% were not confident that incidents being reported would lead to measures being put in place to stop them reoccurring. MPs are also expected to look at the complaints system as a means of redress for patients when mistakes are made.
Meeting details
Issues to be considered with the second panel include whether greater regulation of NHS managers could help drive up standards and improve patient safety.
The Committee also hold an evidence session on Monday 20 May as part of its inquiry into prevention with witnesses including Adrian Charles. More info here.
