WEC to explore everyday issues faced by assistance dog owners
The Women and Equalities Committee (WEC) will explore everyday issues faced by assistance dog owners during a one-off evidence session.
Meeting details
MPs on the cross-party committee will hear from senior representatives from Guide Dogs UK, Assistance Dogs UK and Dogs for Good, including the lived experience of an assistance dog owner.
The session will examine the prevalence of unlawful discrimination when seeking the services of taxi and private hire vehicles, retail, restaurants and accommodation.
It will also consider why such issues are prevalent, how businesses can be educated in preventing them, and communicating the legal rights afforded to assistance dog owners.
The Equality Act 2010 prohibits service providers from discriminating against those who need an assistance dog and requires service providers to make reasonable adjustments for disabled customers.
