Astronomy comes to Earth: how do other countries compare to the UK on infrastructure, commercialisation and diversity in astronomy?

In this fourth evidence hearing on UK astronomy the Committee will switch focus to our own planet: exploring what lessons can be learnt from other countries around the world on how they support astronomy.

How does the UK compare to other nations on funding, communicating and commercialising astronomic research?

What are other nations doing to improve diversity and inclusion in the sector, and to support the crucial links between academia, government and industry?

Some witnesses to this SITC inquiry have argued that UK funding levels for astronomy are inadequate, and not commensurate with demand in an expanding sector.

There are concerns about the light pollution - both on Earth and from low-orbit satellites - that interferes with astronomic observation; changing the relationship that people have with the sky and universe around us and hindering the valuable contribution that amateur astronomers make to the science.

What more could the UK be doing to enhance diversity and inclusion and to protect and support the “space” for astronomical study, research and enjoyment?
