IDC hears evidence on "forgotten conflict” in Sudan
On Tuesday 23rd April the International Development Committee will question senior aid officials operating on the ground in Sudan as the latest conflict to emerge there - which has been described as a “forgotten conflict” by the UN - is escalating.
There are large and growing numbers of internally displaced people, with allegations of war crimes and atrocities being committed and dozens of aid workers killed, injured or detained.
The conflict and displaced persons are spilling over into neighbouring countries, with the UN estimating that since the start of the conflict in April 2023 640,000 Sudanese refugees have arrived in South Sudan, 571,000 in Chad and 500,000 in Egypt. None of these countries are well placed to support refugees.
Meeting details
The Committee will seek to gain expert insight into the ongoing conflict and how the UK’s FCDO can help. Areas of questioning will include:
- Malnutrition in the country
- The state of healthcare
- Difficulties in delivering aid
- The effects of the conflict on women, girls and children
- Internally displaced people and refugees
- The situation for aid workers
- The current state of the conflict and the prospect of a ceasefire
