Whole of Government Accounts 2021-22 scrutinised by PAC

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) holds an evidence session on the Whole of Government Accounts (WGA) 2021-22 at 1.30pm on Wednesday 15 May.

Meeting details

At 1:30pm: Oral evidence
Inquiry Whole of Government Accounts 2021-22
Permanent Secretary at HM Treasury
Director General, Public Spending at HM Treasury
Director, Public Spending at HM Treasury

The WGA consolidates the accounts of over 10,000 public organisations, including central government departments, local authorities, devolved administrations, the NHS, academy schools and public corporations, to provide the most complete and accurate picture of the UK’s public finances.

The Committee’s report on the WGA 2020-21 warned that inaccuracies and delays within it were harming transparency for billions in spending, and that it was of unacceptably reduced utility to Parliament and public.  In particular, it found that the crisis in local audit reduced transparency over approximately £100 billion of local government spending, and impacted other areas of government spending.

Based on the National Audit Office (NAO)’s report on the WGA 2021-22, the Committee will hear from senior officials at HM Treasury on subjects including:

  • Progress in improving timeliness of WGA’s production;
  • Continuing issues with timeliness of local government audit;
  • Tracking the long-term impacts of COVID spending.
