Committee to hear from local and national institutions about future skills
The Industry and Regulators Committee will continue its inquiry into skills for the future by hearing from local and national institutions involved in the skills system. In the first session, the Committee will hear from the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (IfATE), which works with employers to set standards for apprenticeships and technical qualifications. The Committee will discuss the impact of the Apprenticeship Levy, how IfATE works with employers to decide what standards and qualifications are needed, and whether this is flexible enough to adapt to future skills needs.
In the second session, the Committee will hear from local institutions and business groups involved in identifying local skills needs. The Committee will consider what skills will be needed for the future, what the role of employers should be in encouraging skills development and whether this is clear to them, and what reforms to the skills system may be needed to ensure it is ready for the future.

Possible questions include:
- What kinds of skills do you think will be needed for the future of the UK economy? Is the UK’s skills and training system capable of equipping increasing numbers of people with these skills?
- What impact has the Apprenticeship Levy had on employers’ provision of apprenticeships, and their attitudes towards them?
- What should the role of employers be in encouraging the development of skills in the UK? Should industry be a consumer, funder, trainer or co-designer of skills provision?
- In a more mobile, flexible labour market, what incentives do employers have to provide training for their employees?
