Carer’s Allowance and young carers - Work and Pensions Committee to question DWP Minister Mims Davies MP

The Work and Pensions Committee questions the Minister for Disabled People, Health and Work, Mims Davies MP on the effectiveness of Carer’s Allowance (CA) and whether it provides adequate support for carers.

The hearing follows a session held in March, where the Committee explored the case for modernising CA after learning during its benefit levels in the UK inquiry of several challenges, including those related to the payment rate, eligibility and how DWP is dealing with the issue of overpayments.

The Minister is likely to face questions on the Government’s progress in addressing the problem of overpayments and how it handles cases where overpayments have been allowed to build up over several years.

Before hearing from the Minister, the Committee will explore the experiences of young carers and young adult carers, and the challenges they may face when accessing support from DWP. Young adult carers are prohibited from receiving CA if they are in full-time education or study for 21 or more per week.
