Western Balkans: developments in Kosovo and Serbia to be examined
Following an increase in violence and instability in Kosovo and Serbia, the Foreign Affairs Committee holds a one-off evidence session examining the situation in the Western Balkans.
The Western Balkans region has seen a rise in nationalism, foreign interference, corruption and press restrictions, and the session will explore the UK’s strategy in this region. The session, which will be held at 14.30 on Tuesday 19 March, will also look at political developments in Kosovo and Serbia, including the September 2023 Banjska attack.
Meeting details
The Committee will hear from former Secretary General of NATO, Lord Robertson.
Questions are likely to cover how the UK can achieve its objectives in the region and the impact of increased instability regionally. The Committee are likely to discuss the attack in Banjska, Kosovo, in 2023 and recent Serbian elections, and their impact on Aleksandar Vučić’s nationalist agenda. The session is likely to explore the relationship between Serbia and Russia, examining whether NATO should be concerned about increasing military-industrial ties between the two countries.
