Women and Equalities Committee hears evidence on ageist stereotyping in advertising and the media
The Women and Equalities Committee (WEC) hears from the Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO), Ofcom and the Committee of Advertising Practice (CAP) as part of its inquiry into the rights of older people.
This fourth and final session of the cross-party committee’s inquiry examines the prevalence of ageist stereotyping and the use of age discriminatory language and imagery in advertising and the media.
Meeting details
MPs take evidence from the industry watchdogs and regulators on the adequacy of relevant standards, guidance and codes of practice, plus how complaints about the representation of older people are addressed and resolved.
The session also aims to identify actions industry and/or the Government could take to address the normalisation of ageist stereotypes and discriminatory language and imagery in advertising and the media.
WEC launched the inquiry in September 2023 to examine whether discrimination and ageist stereotyping, such as characterising older people as helpless or wealthy “boomers” is preventing them from participating fully in society.
