Alcohol and smoking in focus for major inquiry into preventing ill-health
The committee examines how to prevent harms caused by alcohol, drugs, gambling and smoking in the next stage of its major inquiry into prevention with hearings over two consecutive days. Further planned sessions will consider drugs and gambling and links to ill-health.
Meeting details
MPs focus on smoking with Professor Javed Khan who led an independent review for the government which found that England would miss a target to be ‘smokefree’ by 2030 without further action. Estimates of the overall cost of smoking to the UK economy sit at up to £17 billion a year. Questions are expected on “critical” recommendations for tobacco control from the Khan Review, including a ban on sales of cigarettes to young people born after a specific year and promoting vaping as a tool to help smokers quit.
