What are the challenges that renewable energy and battery storage face when connecting to the grid, and how can they be resolved?

The Environmental Audit Committee has previously warned that, in some cases, it can take up to 15 years to secure a grid connection for a solar installation, a delay which could hamper efforts to bolster renewable energy generation in the country for a net zero future. What are the challenges renewable energy projects face when planning how the electricity they generate will be delivered to the GB grid—and how can they be connected in a more timely and efficient way?

Meeting details

Emeritus Professor of Physics at University of Oxford

EAC will be holding a further evidence session as part of its Enabling sustainable electrification of the UK economy inquiry. During this two-panel session, Committee members will be examining how different types of renewable energy generation and storage can best be connected to the expanding electricity grid. They will be discussing with experts from Solar Energy UK, Renewable UK, Imperial College, E3G, University of Oxford, Modo Energy and the British Hydropower Association what barriers certain technologies face to being rolled out and connected at scale.

Other issues that will be explored include how best to integrate generation and storage into the grid, and suggestions of what measures the Committee ought to recommend to Government to help roll out renewable energy and energy storage more rapidly.
