Women and Equalities Committee take evidence on barriers faced by older workers in the labour market

The Committee takes evidence from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) and the Trades Union Congress (TUC) on Wednesday, 28 February on support for those who want to stay in work longer as part of its inquiry into the rights of older people.

Meeting details

At 9:50am: Oral evidence
Inquiry The rights of older people
Chief Strategy Officer at 55/Redefined
Senior Labour Market Economist at Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD)
Head of Rights, Social and Economics at Trades Union Congress (TUC)
Dean and Professor of Organisational Behaviour at University of Edinburgh Business School

This third session of the cross-party committee’s inquiry examines age biases in recruitment, plus barriers to progression in work, including access to and take up of training and skills. MPs will hear from a representative of 55/Redefined, an organisation which works with businesses to tackle ageism, plus an academic from the University of Edinburgh Business School.

During the session, discussion focuses on how best to address the increase in economic inactivity among older people of working age including in relation to occupational health, plus issues around retirement choices. It  considers measures proposed by the Government on supporting older people to return to and remain in work, such as flexible working and returnships, and whether a strategy on ageing and extending working lives is needed.

WEC launched the inquiry in September 2023 to examine whether discrimination and ageist stereotyping, such as characterising older people as helpless or wealthy “boomers” is preventing them from participating fully in society.
