Westminster MPs to hear from Scottish Youth Parliament on youth priorities
For the first time, Members of the Scottish Youth Parliament (MYSPs) will appear before MPs at an upcoming select committee session.
Meeting details
A selection of MSYPs have been invited by the Scottish Affairs Committee to discuss their work as the elected representatives of young Scots and the barriers young people face participating in democracy.
The session is an opportunity for MPs to hear directly from young people about the issues that matter most to them. Topics voted by MSYPs as priorities – and likely to be discussed during the session – include the climate crisis and the right to food.
As part of its ongoing work advocating for children and young people’s rights, in December the Youth Parliament wrote to decision makers calling on them to incorporate the United National Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) into Scots law.
This would bring into law the international human rights treaty that covers all aspects of children’s lives including civil, political, economic and cultural rights. MYSPs will likely face questions on this six-year campaign and what incorporating the UNCRC would mean for young people in Scotland.
