Lady Chief Justice to take questions from Justice Committee
Rt Hon Baroness Carr of Walton-on-the-Hill, the first female President of the Courts of England and Wales and Head of the Judiciary of England and Wales, takes questions from the Justice Committee during an evidence session on Tuesday, 16 January.
Meeting details
The Lady Chief Justice (LCJ) sits in both the Criminal and Civil divisions of the Court of Appeal, in the Divisional Court and also, by invitation, in the UK Supreme Court. Dame Sue Carr was sworn in as the first Lady Chief Justice in a live-streamed ceremony at the Royal Courts of Justice on 2 October 2023.
MPs on the cross-party committee explore the Lady Chief Justice’s priorities for her term in office and discuss some of the key issues facing the judiciary and the courts during a wide-ranging evidence session. The former Lord Chief Justice, Lord Burnett of Maldon, presented his Annual Report 2023 to Parliament on 5 September 2023.
The session is expected to touch upon judicial diversity and inclusion, the recruitment and welfare of the judiciary, plus cross-deployment of judges. MPs will also explore issues relating to caseloads and timeliness in the criminal, county and family courts, plus the HM Courts and Tribunals Service reform programme and data and measures to achieve open justice.
RASSO (rape and serious sexual offences) and the use of pre-recorded cross-examination under Section 28 of the Youth Justice and Criminal Evidence Act 1999 may also be discussed alongside working with Parliament.
