MPs to hear from former Lord Speakers on membership of the House of Lords
Former Lord Speakers and the Chair of the Lord Speaker's Committee on the size of the House of Lords will be questioned by the Public Administration and Constitutional Affairs Committee on Tuesday, in the second of PACAC’s evidence sessions examining the membership of the House of Lords.
MPs will take evidence from the Lord Speakers who presided over the House between 2006-2021 on their views on the role of the Lords, its size and membership, and the robustness of the appointments process to the Lords.
Meeting details
In the second panel, MPs will hear from the Chair of the Lord Speaker's Committee on the size of the House. The Lord Speaker’s Committee has made recommendations on the need for capping the size of the House of Lords and on introducing term limits. MPs will use next week’s session as an opportunity to discuss these recommendations and other possible reforms with witnesses.
Tuesday’s evidence session will also explore whether current arrangements are ensuring the right composition of the House of Lords to properly fulfil its functions as a second chamber, the continued presence of the Hereditary Peers and the Lords Spiritual, and the role of the independent vetting body, the House of Lords Appointments Commission (HOLAC).
