Committee to take evidence from the Minister on long-duration energy storage 

The House of Lords Science and Technology Committee will hold its final evidence session for its inquiry into long-duration energy storage. 

The Committee will hear from the Rt Hon Graham Stuart MP, Minister for Energy Security and Net Zero in the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero.

Members will seek to understand the Government’s view on the nature and scale of the UK’s energy storage needs and its current and proposed policies to support the transportation and storage of hydrogen and other long-duration energy storage technologies. The committee will explore the roles of bodies such as Ofgem, the Future System Operator and DESNZ in ensuring the delivery of sufficient long-duration energy storage to balance a decarbonised grid by 2035.

  • What modelling work is being done to determine the levels of need for different types of storage by 2035
  • The Government’s assessment of the recommendation from the Climate Change Committee that it identify some key “no regrets” investments that could proceed immediately
  • The Government’s recently opened consultation on a cap-and-floor subsidy for storage
  • What work is being done on developing a Strategic Spatial Energy Plan
  • Reforms that might be required to the planning system to address concerns about projects being able to get off the ground
