MPs to examine access to funding for Scotland’s scientific research

Gathering evidence for its inquiry on Scotland’s science sector, the Scottish Affairs Committee will hear from research funding bodies in an upcoming public session on Monday 15 January at 3pm.

Representing UK Research and Innovation and Executive Chair at Research England
Director of Research & Innovation at Scottish Funding Council

The Scottish Funding Council and UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), the UK’s biggest research funder, will appear before MPs to discuss levels of and access to financial support for scientific research projects in Scotland.

Questions for UKRI are likely to cover whether Scotland receives a fair proportion of funding, given that Scotland has 11.4% of researchers in the UK yet receives 5.9% of Innovate UK’s funding.

UKRI’s rationale for only funding projects up to 80% of the full cost, and the impact this has on Scotland’s research sector given the prevalence of smaller and independent organisations, is also likely to come under examination.
