MPs to hear from Probation Service and charities on reducing escalating violence against women and girls
The Women and Equalities Committee will examine how effectively the perpetrator intervention programmes run by the Probation Service and third sector help to prevent an escalation of violence against women and girls (VAWG), in an evidence session on Wednesday 17 January at 10am.
Meeting details
MPs will explore whether there is evidence to show that men who commit certain types of non-criminal VAWG offences go on to commit more dangerous offences. The session will also look at the accessibility of programmes, current capacity levels, and if long waiting times contribute to reoffending.
With the Probation Service under significant pressure, and recent high-profile cases demonstrating the catastrophic consequences of monitoring mistakes, MPs will question executives on how effectively the Service works to prevent VAWG perpetrators from escalating to more serious crimes. The Committee is likely to investigate how the Probation Service evaluates its intervention programmes and what it is doing to reduce wait times.
The session gathers evidence for the Committee’s inquiry on escalating violence against women and girls, launched following a series of high-profile cases in which victims were raped or murdered by perpetrators with a history of offending.
