Committee to hear political perspectives on the UK’s regulators
The Industry and Regulators Committee will continue its inquiry into the work of the UK’s regulators by hearing from John Penrose MP and Dame Meg Hillier MP. The Committee will discuss how regulators are held accountable, particularly by Parliament and Select Committees, and the resources that Parliament needs to properly scrutinise regulatory performance. The Committee will also consider whether the UK’s regulators are given a clear job to do, their relationship with the Government, their engagement with consumers and businesses, and whether they have the necessary skills and resources.

Possible questions include:
- What impact can Parliament and the Government have on regulators through scrutiny and accountability?
- How independent of the Government are the UK’s major regulators, and to what extent does this depend on how they are resourced and how their appointments are made?
- To what extent are regulators being expected to address political or distributional decisions?
- How transparent are UK regulators about their own performance?
