MPs to examine the framework which supports relations between UK and Scottish Governments

The UK and Scottish Governments’ relationship and the framework underpinning how they work together will come under examination in an upcoming Scottish Affairs Committee session on Monday 18 December at 3pm.

Introduced in January last year, the new framework saw Governments in each part of the UK agree to reform how they engage with each other. It replaced a system established in 1999 that was widely criticised for its lack of transparency, irregular meetings and weak processes for managing disputes.

As part of its inquiry into intergovernmental relations, marking 25 years since the passing of the Scotland Act, the Committee will hear evidence from academics on how effectively the new intergovernmental relations framework has been operating.

In evidence to this inquiry, the Committee has heard that intergovernmental relations between the UK’s four Governments have come under strain in recent years following the UK’s exit from the EU. MPs will likely question witnesses on whether framework reforms can effectively resolve disputes, particularly on areas of post-EU exit policy, and whether they have set foundations for a more positive relationship between Governments.
